Science for better crops

Farmers in the developing world face agricultural challenges far different from their counterparts in industrialized countries. The destruction wreaked on their crops by drought, pest and disease infestations, and low soil fertility is exacerbated by their lack of resources, which puts irrigation, fertilizers, and pesticides beyond their reach.

These production constraints often represent the difference between healthy families and hungry families.

The Generation Challenge Programme aims to bridge that gap by using advances in molecular biology and harnessing the rich global stocks of crop genetic resources to create and provide a new generation of plants that meet these farmers' needs.

Subprogramme

Genetic Diversity of Global Genetic Resources

At the core of the Challenge Programme is the extensive characterization at the structural and functional level of the vast genetic resources

Comparative Genomics for Gene Discovery

The second Subprogramme of the Challenge Programme focuses on the tools, technologies, and approaches to achieve an understanding of gene systems

Trait Capture for Crop Improvement

The ultimate development goal is to provide new crop varieties that are selected and adopted by the target communities and farmers in resource-limited regions

Genetic Resources, Genomic, and Crop Information Systems

Clearly, the Challenge Programme will involve the capture, storage, integration, analysis, and dynamic dissemination

Capacity Building

Capacity-building is a major goal of this Challenge Programme, and it is appropriate to dedicate considerable resources to capacity-building.
