GCP’s Subprogramme 5 launched the Capacity-building à la carte Programme in 2007—a more team-focused support programme, in addition to GCP fellowship awards and travel grants. The goal of the two individual awards is to facilitate innovative research related to GCP-specific themes by scientists at national agricultural research programmes. However, at implementation, it soon became apparent that there were impediments preventing scientists from applying their new knowledge—sometimes simply lack of facilities in their home institutions.
Hence came the Capacity-building à la carte Programme as one way to fill this gap, in addition to the two individual programmes. Thus far, there have been two calls. The main rationale is to provide tailored capacity-building to national research teams working on GCP research, so they benefit from short- to medium-term customised training and research.
