Mining more out of data: Participant experiences from the Genotyping Support Service trial phase
24–28 September 2007
Zaragoza, Spain
Researchers from seven countries came together at the GCP Genotyping Support Service workshop in Zaragoza, Spain. The primary goal of the workshop—organised by Subprogramme 5 (SP5), in collaboration with the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ)—was to support GCP researchers to optimally analyse and interpret data from the trial phase of the Genotyping Support Service. Workshop logistics were handled by Humberto Gomez (GCP GSS Coordinator) and Laura Ruiz (SP5 Programme Assistant).
Workshop facilitators Fred van Eeuwijk, Hans Jansen and Marcos Malosetti of Wageningen University facilitated group discussions on the outline and structure of statistical models, stressing the importance for participants to both properly structure their data and carefully formulate their research questions before embarking on analysis.
With these guiding principles, participants set to work: after the essential initial step of re-defining their statistical analysis and correctly formatting their data, participants were given access to, and instructed on, how to install free statistical software for data analysis. Areas of study for this hands-on course. To name but a few, areas covered included the population structure of Musa data, the analysis of a potential new genetic source of resistance to Cassava Mosaic Disease and results of marker-assisted breeding data for sets of Tanzanian cassava germplasm
The participants—hailing from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Philippines, Tanzania, and Nigeria—left Zaragoza knowing how to plan for and implement sound statistical analyses, as well as with strong possibilities of authoring peer-reviewed publications from their coursework.
Both participants and course instructors, who were highly commended for their excellent performance and leadership skills, were rewarded for their hard work with evening outings including sight-seeing and sampling the local Aragon Province cuisine.
