Issue 32--June 2008

24 June 2008

Our focus in this issue is capacity-building opportunities for developing country crop research programmes. We would also like to inform you on an imminent change in SP4 leadership.

Genotyping Support Service: 2 nd call for proposals now open

We are very pleased to announce our 2nd call for Genotyping Support Service proposals, in coordination and collaboration with the Global Crop Diversity Trust and the Global Partnership Initiative for Plant Breeding Capacity Building (GIPB).

GCP’s Genotyping Support Service (GSS) facilitates access by national agricultural research systems (NARS) to genotyping technologies, providing a much-needed bridge between laboratory and field research worldwide. GSS can be considered as an ‘all-inclusive package’ that offers cost-efficient genotyping services, providing access to data and support (which builds local capacity), and including training for proper interpretation of genotype and phenotype data to assist modern plant breeding in developing countries.

Submissions for this second call are from 1 July–31 August 2008. More

African Scientists Fellowship Programme

From Cornell University’s Institute for Genomic Diversity (IGD), this six-month fellowship for African nationals funds training in plant genetic diversity, biodiversity conservation, molecular-marker-assisted crop improvement or related areas.

Application deadline: 31 August 2008. More

Huazhang Agricultural University and Bioversity International Scholarship Programme

This 18–24-month scholarship is for a post-doctoral programme on molecular characterisation for use of genetic resources.

Application deadline: 31 August 2008. More

Change of guard in Subprogramme 4

GCP is delighted to announce Graham McLaren as the successful candidate to head our Bioinformatics and Crop Information Systems Subprogramme (SP4) on a full-time basis from September 15 this year. Graham takes over from Theo van Hintum, who is stepping down on 30 June 2008. More
