Another string to the SP5 bow: Launch of the Molecular Marker 'Toolbox'
GCP’s Subprogramme 5 is pleased to widen its array of resources through the launch of its Molecular Marker Toolbox. The Toolbox, which aims to ease access to publicly available molecular marker information on 19 food security crops, is the culmination of an SP5-funded project ably led by Veerle Van Damme. More

1. GCP rice collaborators hit the headlines
The findings of GCP collaborators working on a rice project in The Philippines have been in the media spotlight. Results from the GCP SP2 Commissioned project G4005.35 ‘Sequencing multiple and diverse rice varieties: connecting whole-genome variation with phenotype’, led by Ken McNally of IRRI, have been published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), news which featured in two press releases. 4. Molecular-assisted breeding workshop, 29th June–3rd July 2009, Zaragoza, Spain: Resources now available
Twenty-six participants from around the globe participated in this Subprogramme 5-supported workshop. Course materials, including abstracts, presentations and pictures, are accessible at GCP’s Capacity-building Corner. More

5. Workshop held on next generation sequencing technology data analysis’, 21–23 July 2009, ICRISAT, India
Collaborators gathered for a GCP workshop hosted at ICRISAT Headquarters in India last month. The event, held as part of a new GCP Subprogramme 4 project which aims to provide data analysis support for existing SP2 projects, was organised by the project Principal Investigator and SP2 Leader Rajeev Varshney. More

1. CPWF releases call for Phase II project proposals: Andes, Mekong, Nile river basins
The CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF) is seeking submissions for its Open Competition Phase II projects, focusing on the Andes, Mekong and Nile river basins. Deadline for submission of applications: 31st August 2009. More

2. International conference on food security and climate change in dry areas
An international conference, focusing on food security issues projected to be affected by climate change, particularly in the dry areas, will be held from 12–15 October 2009 in Amman, Jordan. The event will be hosted by Jordan’s Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with ICARDA and other partners. More

3. Workshop on: Capacity development for farm management strategies to improve crop-water productivity using AquaCrop
A five-day workshop will be held from 25–29 October 2009 in Cairo, Egypt, to train participants in the practical applications of ‘AquaCrop’, a crop model recently developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Deadline for submission of applications: 1st September 2009. More
