Eugene Terry Named as Chairman of GCP Programme Steering Committee

Dr. Eugene Terry, a plant pathologist by training and an agricultural research and development specialist with over thirty-five years of experience in research and research management, has been named chairman of the GCP Programme Steering Committee. Dr Terry was the first Director General of the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA) and the Implementing Director of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), a public/private sector partnership organization that promotes access and delivery of advanced agricultural technology for resource poor African farmers, in addition to many other notable achievements. GCP First Annual Research Meeting in Brisbane a Success

Over 75 GCP member scientists and interested observers participated in the first annual research meeting of the Generation Challenge Programme. Held at the University of Queensland and the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre, the meeting covered the first year of GCP research and plans for year 2. CGIAR Science Council Comments on the Generation CP Medium Term Plan

They were, for the most part, very positive, and they endorsed the strategy the GCP has employed thus far and future plans.

 

European Commission Beginning Review of GCP

Two review team members, Adrienne Martin of the Natural Resources Institute in the UK Jorgen Jakobsen of the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences, will visit four GCP sites ? Agropolis, CIMMYT, CIAT, and EMBRAPA ? in October and November as part of the review process. The EC is the GCP?s largest donor.

 

Generation Fellowship ? DEADLINE 30 NOVEMBER

Fellowship opportunity for scientists from developing countries to conduct research outside their home countries for 3 mos.?1 yr. The are two fellowships per subprogramme (Genetic Diversity of Global Genetic Resources, Comparative Genomics for Gene Discovery, Trait Capture for Crop Improvement, and Bioinformatics). Stakeholder Committee of the GCP to Meet in Rome

Composed of representatives from NGOs, farmers organizations, private sector organizations, and NARS, the Stakeholder Committee serves as a neutral platform for inter-stakeholder dialogue on issues related to the various stages of GCP development and implementation. They will meet for the first time in Rome in late Nov./early Dec.

GCP Liaising With Syngenta Foundation on Humanitarian Initiative

The Generation Challenge Programme is partnering with the Syngenta Foundation on an initiative to use cereal genomics to improve sorghum and millet in Africa.
