Jean Marcel Ribaut Joins GCP as Director
Dr. Ribaut officially became Director of the Generation Challenge Program on 1 September 2005. He joins the five Subprogram Leaders ? Jean Christophe Glaszmann (SP1), Hei Leung (SP2), Jonathan Crouch (SP3), Theo van Hintum (SP4), and Carmen de Vicente (SP5) ? as head of the GCP Management Team. ?I?m honoured to lead such a distinguished team and very excited to take up the position as Director of this innovative program,? Generation Challenge Programme 2005 Annual Research Meeting ? STARTS NEXT WEEK!
The GCP Annual Research Meeting (29 September through 1 October) begins next Thursday in Rome, Italy. Next Round of Competitive Grants - CALL WILL BE OPENED IN JANUARY 2006, PROJECTS TO BEGIN JULY 2006
In previous e-newsletters, we announced that the next round of competitive grants would open in late 2005, but by executive decision, the call for proposals will be released in early January 2006. This allows the GCP Management Team sufficient time to evaluate current projects, develop a targeted call for proposals, and ensure that the next round are integrated with the GCP portfolio and our new delivery strategy (see below for more details). Note that the projects, once selected, are still scheduled to begin in July 2006.
DRAFT Concept Notes for 2006 Commissioned Research ? NOW AVAILABLE

Please note that a few are still missing but will be added to the site shortly. These concept notes will be discussed at the Annual Research Meeting, so participants to that meeting will have a chance to give their feedback to the respective Subprogram Leaders. Note that there are fewer projects being commissioned this year because many of the 2005 commissioned research projects are 2-year projects and are thus being commissioned for 2006. GCP Delivery Strategy ? DRAFT NOW AVAILABLE
As part of its mandate, Subprogram 5: Capacity Building and Enabling Delivery was tasked with articulating the delivery strategy for GCP products. Not an easy or straightforward undertaking, the development of the delivery strategy began with an online consultation with over 25 GCP scientists, socioeconomists, private sector representatives, intellectual property specialists, and delivery experts. That consultation led to a drafting workshop held in July at CIAT of 15 participants ? again ranging from plant geneticists and breeders to agricultural economists to even farmers ? who developed a first draft of the strategy, which defined products and users in the GCP context, envisioned product delivery plans, and stressed the need for comprehensive monitoring and evaluation and impact assessment systems.
