The Generation Challenge Programme (GCP) Fellowship awards were established to facilitate innovative research related to GCP's central theme--unlocking genetic diversity of crops for the resource-poor. The competitive fellowships are offered to scientists wishing to conduct research outside their home countries or institutions for a period between three months and one year. The Programme emphasises research in GCP's four thematic Subprogrammes:
1) Crop genetic diversity
2) Genomics towards gene discovery
3) Trait capture for crop improvement
4) Bioinformatics and crop information systems
Since GCP's inception, as of June 2008, 24 Fellowship awards have been granted--8 in 2005, 6 in 2006, 5 in 2007, and 5 in 2008. The maximum award per fellow is usually up to US$25,000 and is intended to cover travel, living expenses, accommodation, laboratory consumables, and conference participation where applicable.
