LIMS: Quality Management in GCP laboratories

.

In order to standarize and continously improve the research input and output of the GCP research projects, quality management is standarized in the GCP laboratories by the use of LIMS, standarized and automatic Laboratory Information systems.

The GCP research programs generate large amounts of genotypic sequence data. GCP’s attention to Research Data Management resulted in the development of a laboratory information management system (LIMS), to assist in the automatisation of the sample workflow associated with genotyping.
LIMS provides routines and procedures to efficiently manage the workflow, to handle the large amounts of genotypic data and to encourage good laboratory practices.

ICARDA started the development of a user friendly Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Genomic Management System (GeMS) specifically to target the protocol, processes and materials in a Molecular Laboratory setting (brochure).
ICRISAT designed a LIMS   to automate the sample workflow associated with genotyping experiments.

The LIMS software is freely available for download from ICRISAT   or from CropForge.

LIMS and GeMS services offer researchers tools to store, organize and analyze research data. Genomic LIMS offers capture, storage and documentation of laboratory protocols, procedures, practices and output data. GeMS provides storage and management of molecular marker data in readily useable formats.
Molecular data can be integrated with information on genealogy, phenotype and geography. Core functionality includes sample tracking, auto-binning of alleles, report generation and data management. A software package can be downloaded from this page.

For the management of microsatellite genotype data in a moderately high throughput genotyping laboratory the LIMS software package was developed at ICRISAT. The LIMS software system assists in sample tracking and capture and management of data at different steps of the process.

It leads the user through each step of the process, from the start of the experiment up to the output, the genodetection step with autobinning of alleles and storage of the data. It thus ensures the indentical handling of each and every DNA sample. A tutorial on the use of the sample tracking LIMS is provided.
A software package can be downloaded from this page.
