Molecular Breeding Platform MBP
.
The Molecular Breeding Platform (MBP) is a five-year GCP SP4 research project that started in September 2009 as new initiative of the GPC.
The MPB is setup to enhance the use of molecular breeding techniques for plant breeding in the developing world, by providing tools and technical support. The web-based MPB strives to supply information, analytical tools and related services to design and efficiently conduct molecular and marker-assisted breeding experiments.
The MBP aims to ensure that the fruits of the investments made in developing these tools are also available to the developing world.
The MBP will develope a one-stop-shop facility with centralised and functional access to modern breeding technologies, data management and analysis tools, and valuable breeding material.
The MBP will pilot 10 pre-existing projects on molecular-assisted breeding, covering seven crops across 15 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, in South Asia and in Asia. (Angola, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, China, India and Thailand).
At the time of writing (2009) the MBP focuses on three major aspects:
- the establishment and management of the MPB via a portal and helpdesk
- to make existing tools for data management and molecular breeding available (pedigree information, field and laboratory data), MAB tools (for statistical and genetic analysis, selection, modelling, etc.) and delevopment of an information network, decision supprort tools and workflow system
- provision of access to molecular breeding service (marker service, trait service laboratories) and assistance with a range of molecular breeding support services (business plan development, data management and curation, design and analyis, genetyping and phenotyping, IP and policy)
