Genotyping Support Service (GSS)
|
GCP's GSS 3rd Call for proposals. This call is now closed, but details (for information only) are available here. Results of this call will be announced in due course. |
The Genotyping Support Service (GSS): What’s it all about?
The GSS facilitates access to modern breeding technologies for developing world agricultural research & development organisations. It offers world-class cost-efficient genotyping services, including support and training in analysis for proper interpretation of genotypic and phenotypic data.
Why the GSS?
In crop science, while the developed world and the private sector are intensively using molecular marker technology and reaping significant benefits, researchers in developing countries are scarcely employing these techniques. This is due to many factors such as lack of technical skills, infrastructure, funds or enabling policies. In a bid to overcome some of these problems, GCP created the Genotyping Support Service (GSS) in 2006.

What does GSS offer and who is the target?
The GSS assists developing country scientists benefit from the latest technologies by subcontracting genotyping work, and by undertaking the intricacies of the legal issues and administrative procedures.
Examples of beneficiaries of the GSS include:
- Programmes lacking molecular marker labs
- Programmes whose genotyping needs outstrip their capacity

GSS scope and objectives
GSS aims to help spread the benefits of marker technology in the developing world through the following objectives:
- Technology access: facilitating developing world researchers’ access to molecular marker technologies for germplasm analysis;
- Capacity-building: training researchers in data analysis and knowledge application; and,
- Sustainability and spread: to build a core of researchers who can continue to use the technology, independent of GCP support.

Acknowledging GSS funding and support in publications, presentations and public awareness /publicity materials
GSS researchers are under an obligation to acknowledge GSS support in all releases (presentations, publications, papers, posters, press releases, public awareness/publicity materials, etc.) on, or derived from, work or projects which are (i) GSS-funded/partially GSS-funded and/or (ii) supported by the GSS in any other non-financial way. Reference to this requirement is made in Clause 2 of the Genotyping Service Request Agreement which states that:
2. “CIMMYT [GCP's host agent] may engage a GCP Consortium member or a third-party laboratory (both are referred to herein as the "Laboratory") to perform a genotypic analysis of the Materials. The genotypic data resulting from this analysis will be provided to Institute. Institute agrees that all presentations and written publications arising from or relating to the genotyped data shall acknowledge the contribution of GCP.”
When acknowledging GSS funding and/or non-financial support, please follow the guidelines below:
i) To acknowledge GSS financial support: DO NOT use terms such as 'sponsored by' or 'supported by', or their synonyms or derivatives when referring to funding that has been provided by GCP’s GSS. However, 'financially supported by’ is acceptable. In such cases, we recommend the following text:
This work/project was funded/partially-funded by the Genotyping Support Service of the CGIAR Generation Challenge Programme (GCP).
ii) To acknowledge other non-financial kinds of support provided by the GSS: Please also provide all the details pertaining to this support.
Examples of non-financial support provided by the GSS include, but are by no means limited to, project conceptualisation or provision of research ideas, provision of advice, contacts, editing services, etc.
iii) For information on how to acknowledge different forms of GCP support provided for other GCP projects, please consult our Project Management Policies and Templates page
