The application of modern breeding methods is a prerequisite to realize the GCP mission, the development of better crop variaties for resource-poor farmers.
The breeding methods applied are to be scientfically grounded in the availability of information on plant genetic diversity, genomics and diversity studies and the subsequent analysis and usage of this information.

In modern breeding practices the up to date computer analysis methods are widely used. For GCP breeders and crop researchers, the bioinformaticians of GCP SP4 developed and / or adapted software and computer services in the following fields:
