GCP's sunset

In brief...

July 2012

GCP was conceived as a time-bound 10-year initiative (2004–2013), with the mission of using genetic diversity and advanced crop science to improve crops for greater food security in the developing world. Consistent with the vision at its founding, the Programme will  close at the end of December 2014.  In so doing, we will strive to ensure that GCP’s products and services are well-positioned so as to have not only large but also sustainable impact in a post-GCP scenario. (See full Position Statement and underpinning Position Papers).

Our Sunset Blog is a collection of our most captivating stories, as told by our partners, reflecting the legacy of 10 years of GCP. They focus on our crops, our partnerships, and the approaches that have made us unique – offering lessons learnt and visions for the future.

Our 2010 Transition Strategy outlines our compliance to the CGIAR reforms ongoing in that year, embedding our activities within the CGIAR Research Programmes. The next step is to work on dual strategies for ‘sunset’ and closure for activities that will  either have been completed by December 2014, or that may need to be  transferred to institutes or programmes outside the CGIAR. For this purpose, a Taskforce was formed in June 2012 to assist the GCP Executive Board, Consortium Committee and Management Team in implementing the Sunset strategy, while a Closure Working Group is to be formed later. This Working Group will define a Closing strategy for the Programme, liaising closely with the Executive Board.

We embark upon the process of planning for the winding down of GCP in a spirit of openness, consultation and transparency, endeavouring to keep the GCP community up to date and fully informed on the status of a transition that concerns us all. To this end, please see ‘Timeline’ as well as the links below.
